Before a dental implant
Before a dental implant, can your natural tooth be saved?
If you have been told a tooth may need to come out, find out first whether it can be saved. We do not provide implants. Our focus is preserving natural teeth where clinically appropriate.
How we help
Tooth-saving treatment options
Depending on the tooth, treatment to keep it in place may include one of these.
Root canal treatment
Treats inflamed or infected pulp so the natural tooth can stay in place.
Helps when
- The pulp is inflamed or infected
- There is deep decay or a crack
- Pain follows dental trauma
Root canal retreatment
A previously treated tooth with new symptoms may get another chance.
Possible causes
- Untreated canal anatomy
- New decay or leakage
- A damaged filling or crown
Endodontic surgery
Reaches problems at the root tip that cannot be treated through the tooth.
May suit when
- Retreatment is unlikely to work
- The root tip needs treatment
- Canals are blocked or calcified
Vital pulp therapy
In selected cases, keeps healthy pulp alive instead of removing all of it.
May suit
- Recent pulp exposure
- Young permanent teeth
- Selected adult teeth
Why save it
Why consider saving your natural tooth first?
Where clinically appropriate, keeping the tooth you already have may help preserve:
✓
Natural tooth structure and sensation
✓
Normal chewing function
✓
Your existing bite
✓
The tooth's position in the dental arch
Saving a tooth is not right in every case. Its condition, surrounding tissues, remaining structure and long-term restorability all need to be considered.

Can every tooth be saved?
No. Our aim is not to treat at all costs, but to find out whether keeping the tooth is clinically reasonable. A tooth may not be suitable because of:
✓
Severe structural damage or certain fractures
✓
Not enough remaining tooth structure
✓
Significant periodontal problems
✓
Poor restorability or other factors affecting prognosis
Implant and extraction questions
Questions patients often ask
Short answers to what patients ask before deciding on an extraction or implant. Call us if your question is not here.
Is a dental implant better than saving the natural tooth?
There is no single answer. Endodontic treatment preserves an existing tooth, while an implant replaces one that has been removed. The right approach depends on whether your tooth can still be treated and restored.
Does an infected tooth always need to be removed?
No. Infection alone does not decide it. The tooth's structure, root canal anatomy, surrounding tissues and restorability all need to be assessed.
Does myEndodontist provide dental implants?
No. We provide specialist endodontic treatment focused on saving natural teeth where clinically appropriate.
Can I request a second opinion without a referral?
Yes. You can contact us directly for an assessment or second opinion. A dentist referral is welcome but not required.
Before you lose the tooth, find out whether it can be saved
If extraction has been suggested or you are considering an implant, a specialist assessment shows whether a tooth-preserving option remains.
