Tooth pain diagnosis
Specialist tooth pain diagnosis and second opinions in Brisbane
When the cause is unclear, or previous treatment has not fixed it, our specialists identify the likely source first. A referral is welcome, but you can contact us directly.
How we help
Diagnosis comes before treatment
We work out whether the pain is coming from the pulp, the root canal system, the tooth structure or another source.
Your assessment
We review your symptoms and dental history, then test and image the tooth as needed.
We discuss
- Where the pain is and what triggers it
- How long it lasts and if it comes and goes
- Previous treatment
Second opinions
Another specialist view of the diagnosis, options and prognosis. It does not mean the first advice was wrong.
Useful if
- Root canal or retreatment is advised
- Extraction or an implant is suggested
- Symptoms continue despite treatment
Told you need a root canal?
We can clarify the diagnosis and, if treatment is indicated, explain the next steps clearly.
We check
- If the pulp is irreversibly affected
- That the right tooth is identified
- If the tooth is restorable
Old root canal hurting?
Pain around a previously treated tooth does not automatically mean it must come out.
Possible causes
- Persistent infection or untreated canals
- New decay or a damaged crown
- A crack or fracture
Why an endodontist
Why see an endodontist for complex tooth pain?
Endodontists have extra specialist training in diagnosing problems with the pulp and root canal system. It helps most when:
✓
Pain is hard to localise or reproduce
✓
Standard imaging does not explain the pain
✓
A crack, fracture or dental trauma is involved
✓
Previous treatment makes the diagnosis harder
Our goal is not to recommend treatment at all costs. It is to reach a clear diagnosis first.

Can the tooth still be saved?
Where the prognosis is uncertain, we look at everything that affects whether a natural tooth can be kept:
✓
Remaining tooth structure and root condition
✓
Cracks, fractures and any infection
✓
Gum and bone support around the tooth
✓
Whether it can be restored, and its overall prognosis
Tooth pain questions
Questions patients often ask
Short answers to what patients ask most about tooth pain and second opinions. Call us if your question is not here.
Why does my tooth hurt if the X-ray looks normal?
Some problems are not clearly visible on a standard X-ray. Diagnosis may need clinical testing, a review of your symptoms, different imaging or a specialist examination.
Can pain come from a different tooth?
Yes. Dental pain can be hard to localise and may feel as though it is coming from a neighbouring tooth or another area.
Do I need a root canal if my tooth hurts?
Not necessarily. Tooth pain has several possible causes, so a diagnosis is needed before root canal treatment is recommended.
Do I need a referral?
No. You can contact us directly for an assessment or second opinion. Dentist referrals are also welcome.
Still in pain or unsure what to do next?
A specialist assessment can identify the likely source, explain what is happening and whether treatment is needed. At myEndodontist, diagnosis comes before treatment.
