Vital pulp therapy

Vital pulp therapy in Brisbane to help keep your tooth alive

If enough healthy pulp remains after deep decay, trauma or exposure, we may be able to treat only the affected tissue and keep the rest of the pulp alive.

How it works

What vital pulp therapy involves

VPT is a group of conservative procedures that protect or remove only the exposed, inflamed or damaged pulp, keeping healthy tissue deeper in the tooth.

What happens

Treatment focuses only on the affected part of the pulp, so the tooth can keep functioning naturally.

Approaches include

  • Pulp capping to protect exposed pulp
  • Pulpotomy to remove some affected pulp
  • Keeping healthy tissue in place

Under the microscope

Magnification supports a precise, tissue-preserving approach in a very small area.

It helps us

  • Examine the pulp closely
  • Remove affected tissue conservatively
  • Place protective materials precisely

Young permanent teeth

Healthy pulp lets a developing root keep maturing, which can help strengthen the tooth.

The root may continue to

  • Grow longer
  • Develop thicker dentine walls
  • Mature around the root tip

Adults too

Age alone does not decide. Some adult teeth still have healthy pulp after deep decay or limited exposure.

Suitability depends on

  • Symptoms and pulp condition
  • Inflammation and contamination
  • Remaining tooth structure

Good to know

What vital pulp therapy can and cannot do

VPT only works when enough healthy pulp remains. We explain the expected benefits, limitations and follow-up before treatment.

✓

Only suitable when healthy living tissue remains

✓

The tooth still needs monitoring afterwards

✓

If the pulp later loses vitality, further treatment may be needed

✓

Some temporary sensitivity can occur after treatment

How much healthy pulp remains cannot be established from symptoms alone. It needs a specialist assessment.

Vital pulp therapy questions

Questions patients often ask

Short answers to what patients ask most about vital pulp therapy. Call us if your question is not here.

Can vital pulp therapy prevent a root canal?

In suitable teeth, yes. VPT may let healthy pulp stay alive and avoid full root canal treatment. It is only appropriate when enough healthy living tissue remains.

Is vital pulp therapy only for children?

No. It is particularly valuable in developing permanent teeth, but selected adult teeth may also be suitable.

What is the difference between pulp capping and pulpotomy?

Pulp capping protects exposed pulp without removing it. A pulpotomy removes some affected pulp while preserving healthy tissue deeper within the tooth.

What happens if vital pulp therapy does not work?

If the pulp later becomes irreversibly inflamed, infected or loses vitality, root canal treatment may be required.

Could your tooth be saved without a full root canal?

If decay, trauma or another problem has affected the pulp, there may still be healthy tissue to preserve. An assessment shows whether vital pulp therapy suits your tooth or another treatment would be better.
